VAA, as part of its outreach to neighborhoods and communities, deploys its mobile "family delta force" teams, which visit the homes of severely wounded and disabled veterans – many of which are unable to travel and assess their needs, be they for employment, financial aid medical/psychological counseling and assistance. VAA, as part of its outreach to neighborhoods and communities, deploys its "Family Delta Force" teams, which make special visits to the homes of veterans in great need -- because of severe physical injuries and/or serious mental health issues like PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). These veterans often have trouble traveling, and thus the teams come to them. Our Family Delta Force teams meet individually with these veterans, and offer to connect those who are ready to do so with Champion Mentors; the team members also meet with family members of the veterans, to see if they want to take advantage of the program, even if the veterans themselves are not ready to benefit from this opportunity. For a recent visit of a Family Delta Force team, five members of the New York Mets baseball team stopped by to show their support for the veteran and his family (see video on the home page). Our team members inquire whether there are other needs that the veterans have -- apart from employment -- and, if so, work to refer them to other experts who can help with financial aid, medical/psychological counseling and other kinds of assistance. |
